Breastfeeding Pinays: Hakab na! A Breastfeeding Mob

July 30, 2013 By: Erlaine6 Comments

Yes, you read it right. There will be an event called Hakab na! A Breastfeeding Mob here in the Philippines!  =)

What does hakab and mob mean?

Hakab is a Tagalog word which means “clinging tightly to the body” or “tight-fitting”. While mob or flash mob according to Wiki is a group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual and seemingly pointless act for a brief time, then quickly disperse, often for the purposes of entertainment, satire, and artistic expression.”

But this event is far from being pointless. It is all about breastfeeding awareness. Breastfeeding is one of the best gift a mother can give to her child. It provides a child with a strong immune system and gives a special kind of bonding to mother and child. Moms will be sitting side by side feeding their children.

Who are the people behind this important event?

It all started with a group of online friends from N@W (in which I also belong to) who are breastfeeding advocates. This group, which is called KAYA and headed by Velvet Roxas (a Pinay Doula), founded the Breastfeeding Pinays (BFP) which is a breastfeeding support group in Facebook. To promote the importance of breastfeeding, BFP, in cooperation with N@W, Arugaan, Tickled Moms, LATCH, Chronicles of a Nursing Mom, The Painter’s Wife, and other mommy support groups, are organizing a breastfeeding mob on Saturday, August 3, 2013 2:30 PM at Rajah Sulayman (in between Aristocrat and Max’s) along Roxas Blvd. in the city of Manila.

I would love to attend this breastfeeding awareness event even though I only breastfed Kelsea for a couple of months but I have a birthday party to attend. So to show my support, I am inviting you all to join this breastfeeding mob! Go! This is the first in the Philippines and will simultaneously take place in the four (4) key cities in the Philippines: Manila, Bacolod, Davao and Cagayan de Oro.

Everyone who supports breastfeeding are very much welcome. Dads can be there rooting for their breastfeeding wives while children can be proud of their moms who are very committed in giving them the best. If you didn’t get a chance to breastfeed your child for some reason but still you support breastfeeding, you can also help spread the word 🙂

Don’t forget, BREAST is BEST! 🙂
