Art Attack: Birthday Card Project

December 14, 2012 By: Erlaine4 Comments

The NewlywedsAtWork (N@W) mommies spearheaded by Maqui planned a birthday card project for our kids. Mommies who were interested to join will be grouped according to their child’s birth dates. The members of each group will prepare a birthday card for the other kids born on the same month. The birthday card/s may be store-bought or do-it-yourself (DIY). Mommies, with the help of the kids, can turn this into an art project.

This idea was thought by Maqui since nowadays everything is almost digital. Gone were the times that the postman will shoot snail mail into our mailboxes or put on our gates. So with this project, the kids will experience receiving a mail personally addressed to them 🙂

Since Kelsea was a November baby, we were able to do this project last month. There were four mommies in my group so we are to make birthday cards for three kids. We added another kid since Kelsea was not able to make one for a friend who celebrated her birthday last October.

Here are the materials we used:

– construction papers
– foam sheets
– crayons
– glue
– pencil
– scissors
– scotch tape
– pen
– plastic cover
– 8 pcs recycled window from a puzzle

I initially thought of a design and then prepared the cut-outs. The front area of the card will be for the design while the back area will have Kelsea’s birthday message to the kid. I asked her first what she wanted to tell each particular kid and then I wrote that message using a pencil making the letters broken lines. This would make a great writing activity for Kelsea since she could trace the letters and write the message herself 🙂 Then at the bottom, I let her write her name on her own.

I “sandwiched” the construction paper in between 2 windows. Then I let Kelsea stick the rounded cut-out foam sheets for the design I prepared.

I covered the birthday card with plastic cover so it won’t get dirty and crumpled. Here’s our finish project:

And a sample of one of the birthday card messages….

We were supposed to send these birthday cards thru the nearest post office from our place that I know which is beside Alabang Town Center but we didn’t have much time to go there. So I had a Cavite-based courier Erim Express pick them up from our house.
Here’s a picture of Kelsea when she received her first birthday card from Rafa (short for Ayisha Rafaelle) 🙂
