Art Attack: Faces of Our Family Through Shapes

May 30, 2012 By: Erlainecomment

Here’s another art activity for Kelsea. I only prepared it in less than 10 minutes. There are really lots of artsy stuff you can do with the materials below. This particular activity is to introduce more to Kelsea what a family is.

Materials:

Scissors
Glue or paste
Art papers or Construction papers
Paper/Cardboard to stick artwork
Pencil
Ruler
and Imagination 🙂

Procedure:

1. Mommy needs to prepare cut-outs of different shapes and sizes in different colors of paper. If your kid already knows how to cut paper following an outline of shapes, then you may do that also so he/she can start at once with the activity.

2. Lay-out all the materials in front and explain what they need to do. Since this is a concept of what a family is, we are going to make faces of our family using shapes. Explain to him/her the use of each particular shape. Since we are only a family of three, we are only going to make 3 faces with eyes, nose, ears, mouth and hair.

Materials needed

3. Let your kids do the pasting and see how their imagination works. Don’t worry about getting messy. Just work on a mat or on a table that you can easily clean afterwards.

Art is fun!

 4. Ask them whose face they are currently doing. And let them explain why they put those particular shape on each face. Take a look at Kelsea’s work below.

Faces

Top face is Daddy. She gave him long half-oblong ears, big triangular nose, flat-shaped lips and no hair.
Left face is Mommy. She gave her big half-circle ears, small triangular nose, sexy lips and 3 rectangular hairs.
Right face is Kelsea. She wanted to have a small round nose, smaller half-circle ears, pouty lips and 2 rectangular hairs since she told me she has less hair than me.

I even made diamond earrings but she didn’t want to paste them anymore.

5. To complete each faces’ identity, mommy can cut-out the first letter of each family member’s name and let her paste it near the face of the family member. If you have bigger space, you can cut-out all the letters of each family member’s name. This is can also help her be more familiarized with the alphabets.

Now, here’s Kelsea’s masterpiece….
